Umoja trailed after the first quarter, took control in the second, absorbed a UON push in the third and closed the last ten minutes well enough to win it.
Umoja beat UON Terror 69-64 on Saturday at USIU Grounds in a game that kept shifting before Umoja handled the last stretch better. The box score shows the kind of win that usually tells you something useful about a team: it was not one-sided, it was not smooth all the way through, but Umoja stayed in it and found the answers that mattered late.
UON Terror took the first quarter 18-15, but Umoja changed the tone in the second. A 27-19 quarter gave Umoja a 42-37 lead at halftime and put the game back on their terms. UON came again after the break and trimmed it to 55-54 by the end of the third, so this was still alive going into the fourth. Umoja then won the last quarter 14-10 and finished the job.
How the game swung
The game changed hands 14 times, so Umoja never had the luxury of relaxing. The biggest Umoja lead was nine points, and the box score backs up what the scoreboard suggested: this was a proper working win, not a runaway. Umoja had to keep answering, keep competing on the glass and keep finding points without relying on one player to do everything.
That is where the second quarter mattered so much. It gave Umoja room to operate, and that cushion became valuable once UON pushed again in the third. In a close game, one quarter of clear control often becomes the difference. For Umoja, that quarter was the second.
Numbers that mattered
UON actually shot a slightly better field-goal percentage at 37.3%, while Umoja finished at 35.3%. The difference came from the work around those shots. Umoja won the rebound battle 48-44, scored 11 second-chance points to UON's 4, and got a major lift from the bench with 42 points compared to just 10 from the UON bench.
UON were still dangerous in transition, piling up 34 fast-break points, so Umoja had to do this the hard way. That makes the rebounding and bench production even more important. When a team can survive the running game of the opponent and still take the result, it usually means enough different areas were handled well.
Who delivered for Umoja
Kananm Bienfiat led Umoja with 15 points. Elias Guya and Joseph Murage added 9 points each, while Clinton Lijondo gave Umoja 9 points and 9 rebounds. Thomas Kioko scored 8, Bobby Onyango had 7, and Makuch Deng added 5 points and 9 rebounds.
UON had their own shot-makers. Aleu Jacob scored 20, David Miabok had 19, and Paul Angwenyi finished with 15. Umoja still found the result because the load was spread more widely and the team did enough of the dirty work to stop the game from slipping away.
From Umoja's side, this was a win built less on clean shooting and more on depth, rebounds and staying steady when the margin got tight again.
What Umoja take from it
This is the kind of result a team should respect. Umoja did not need a perfect shooting day to win. They needed composure, a strong bench response and a willingness to keep competing after momentum turned a few times. They got all three.
There is still enough in the numbers to study, especially the fast-break points conceded, but the main outcome is simple: Umoja won.
